Silviculture

It is not only the forest sector that is in crisis, it is the forest itself. The sustained yield model combined with bad management, such as overharvesting and fire exclusion, has failed First Nations and the public of British Columbia.

The state of the forest industry today exemplifies concerns raised 19 years ago by Druskha et al. (1993) regarding the concentration of control of timber harvesting rights to a few large companies and the economic collapse of the forest industry because of the failure of the system to invest in the silvicultural capacity to sustain itself. Little has been done by the province to prevent this crisis or situation.
